DIY COOKIE-DECORATING BAR

DIY COOKIE-DECORATING BAR

Makes about 3 cups

Messy, charming, festive—these are the ingredients of a successful kids’ party, and we’ve found that decorating cookies includes all three. There’s something for everyone—some kids focus on color combinations, others are drawn to designs and the decorations, while still others love to use the piping bag. To save time, purchase the cookies and make just the buttercream frosting. Divide it among bowls and color with food coloring. Spoon it into several piping bags fitted with different tips and set them in tall glasses to hold. Dispense decorations—sprinkles and sparkling sugars—in small bowls and arrange cookies on a large platter. It’s a party!

This universally loved and easy-to-spread frosting can be made a day in advance. Store it tightly covered in the refrigerator and bring to room temperature before using.

VANILLA BUTTERCREAM

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature

4 cups confectioners’ sugar

¼ cup heavy cream

½ teaspoon kosher salt

In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to cream the butter. Add the sugar, cream, and salt and beat until the mixture is smooth and fluffy, about 5 minutes.

BLACKBERRY YOGURT MASK

What could be more fun for a gaggle of kids than slathering a cool, creamy potion all over one another’s faces? This mask contains nothing but ingredients you would gladly put in your body, which is a good message to impart to your children. Blackberries are packed with antioxidants, and both yogurt and coconut oil are super hydrating—but more important, the combination is good enough to eat!

¼ cup plain Greek yogurt

2 tablespoons honey

⅓ cup fresh blackberries

2 teaspoons coconut oil

Combine all the ingredients in a food processor or blender and pulse until smooth. Immediately apply to clean skin and leave on for 10 to 20 minutes. Rinse away with warm water. The mixture can be made in advance, covered tightly, and refrigerated for up to 5 days.
